Should Christian T-Shirts be Banned From Schools?

Disclaimer: What you're about to read, you will see, is quite obviously the opposite of how we at JesusBranded feel.

Christian t-shirts can be found everywhere, in almost every form and fashion. There are some for old people, some for young people, and a few that can swing either way. More and more school aged children are picking up these shirts, some of which can be found at http://www.jesusbranded.com/. When they wear these shirts to their local schools, it presents an interesting question. Are Christian t-shirts hurting the chance to provide good education?

Prayer has been taken out of school, the Ten Commandments are off of the walls, but still, students are wearing their t-shirts with pride. How much of a distraction is this for our nation's children and for the teachers who are putting in hard work? Though there is no hard evidence to give us insight into these things, many people within the educational world feel like Christian t-shirts are doing more harm than good.

Why do Christian t-shirts negatively affect the ability of students to get their work done? In a word, they're controversial. The majority of these shirts aren't just touting the love of Jesus. Instead, they are presenting an "in your face" type of evangelism that makes some students uneasy. Other t-shirts make children feel inferior if they don't support the same views. These t-shirts take away from the purpose of education and move the focus from the class material and onto the subject of the shirt. In a word, this could be described as unacceptable.

What can be done to rectify this situation? Teachers are hoping that Christian t-shirts and all other controversial religious gear go the way of prayer in school. They are hoping that school administrators take a stand against distraction and get Christian t-shirts out of schools. There is no guarantee that anything will be done, but teachers know that these t-shirts will continue to make their job harder, rather than easier.

It's time for school principals and administrators to do the right thing. Get the Christian t-shirts out of schools and stop letting children spread their message in that way. School is a place where learning should take place. If any kind of t-shirt is taking away from that, then something has to be done to make the situation better.

They say all press is good press, but when I got this article in my inbox yesterday I couldn't believe what I was reading! I mean, people can wear the most horrible shirts and nobody complains and everybody talks about free speech - but when a Christian wants to speak freely about his/her faith through a shirt...then all of a sudden there is a problem. Oh well, the bible does warn of persecution...

Anyways, sound off and let us know what you think. Any problems from wearing your JB shirts? Better yet, any testimonies?

Much Love,
Salil

  • Statistics show that the majority of AMERICANS believe in GOD.This country was developed with a belief in GOD. I am ashamed of our government which translates to the people of the united states for being the COWARDS we are to allow a few non believers dictate laws to remove religon from our schools and public places. If we the people had any guts at all we would ban together and oust any offical that votes against the wishes of the people.I used to be proud to be an american and for what it stands for, however now days i am ashmed of what we have become. Kids are more dissrespectful than ever,We allow the elected officials to inflict laws and regulations on us on the basis of who contributes the most money to their bank accounts with no reguard to the wishes of the people and nothing will change untill we change and hold our ELECTED OFFICIALS ACCOUNTABLE. In other words either do what we tell them to or if need be PHYSICALLY oust them from office.

  • Given the narrow focus of this web site, and its conviction that it holds the one and only truth, I cannot assume that they will have the integrity to publish my comment.
Should schools permit students to wear T-Shirts that espouse belief in Christianity? The answer, I submit, should be the same whether one espouses Chrisianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Jainism or atheism.
What? You don't like the thought of non-Christians espousing their religious beliefs in your child's public school? Well, neither do non-Christians like T-shirts espousing Christianity in THEIR public schools. The solution? Mature people [that excludes many] should treat religious expression for what it is: deeply personal. Thus, they should express their religious beliefs in their homes and congregations, and not intrude on the beliefs of others by espousing their religious beliefs in public institutions like schools which are intended to be equally open and welcoming to all, regardless of religious [or non-religious] background.
Anything else is hypocrisy and destructive of social peace and respect for others.

  • In accord to cogito... the problem is that Christianity is not at all "deeply personal" in the sense that you describe it. Sure, it is deeply personal to have a close relationship with God, but the God tells Christians to g out and preach the Good News in the Great Commission. Now God doesn't say to go Bible-bashing people, but in relation the the article; T-shirts are hardly pushing your beliefs on others.

Besides, if I want to talk about God, I won't do it through just a T-shirt. These T-shirts can simply be a way to show what you are all about. I talk about God in class discussions, with teachers, with students, and so on; that is perfect freedom of speech, and a T-shirt is a cross between freedom of press and speech.

Oh, and just as a Christian believes they have the answer, why is any other religion (or athiest) any different? That's rhetorical, but just something to think about. Afterall, you automatically assumed your comment would be rejected.

  • I personally love wearing my Christian t-shirts because they can be a great witnessing tool. I think that no one should be allowed to take the right to wear what one wants (unless uniforms are required or a shirt is offensive to anyone, as in, not just one group). I would probably be very upset if I was unable to wear my Christian shirts to school and I've only heard positive comments on them when I wear them- no one seems to be greatly offended. Well, those are my thoughts.

  • Many self proclaimed "open minded" individuals incorrectly surmise the term 'public' to mean the total absence of, or what they really want, the total absence from religious expression.

This mis-guided segement of our great populous would love to proclaim that they themselves should never be exposed to any sort of public religious expression. They further state that said expression should take place only within the privacy of one's home or place of worship.

It is this very thinking (or lack thereof) that led to the demise of many great cultures and to the rise of some of the most abhorrent examples of depravity ever known to mankind.

My mind is filled with examples of countries and peoples who have stamped out all religious expression from their society and to what end? Ultimately the total extinction of freedom. This is the true goal of those who think that the 'public' schools belong to one group of people and not another.

Extinction of Freedom and Liberty? Is this the true price tag associated with the simple issue of t-shirts?

Even more ridiculous is the suggestion that a tee shirt is a distraction from the true goal of education or is placing undue pressure on the viewer. That is the most absurd thing that I have ever witnessed typed in this great English language!

So when I go to our local high school and some well endowed teen is sporting a tee shirt that says "I Am The Treat" or "Got Milk" centered across her chest, is this considered a distraction to the male student body? I assure you, that except for another misguided segement of our population, every male in the school is distracted...including the educators!

In my generation, we prayed over our lunches, we recited the Pledge of Allegance to the United States Flag, we learn REAL HISTORY associated with this great nation and the price paid to achieve the freedom that you all enjoy today.

We learned to accept differences and get along with each other, we learned that if we acted up, then our teacher would brand our butts in 'public', then our parents would show up and brand our butts again!

We turned out to be Leaders, teachers, pastors, fathers, parents, CEO's, students and defenders of freedom...some of us died and are still dying to defend this freedom.

This freedom that you now ask others to freely give up so you will not be offended?

Where on Earth did you get the notion that this is an "Offense Free" country and that you have some special right Not to be offended???

No...these tee shirts are not hurting a thing. No more than the "Got Milk" tee shirts, or the total black worn by the 'goths' or any other piece of clothing for that matter.

Our children are quite capable of learning...just teach them and leave the clothes alone.

  • Greetings from the Philippines!

Wearing Christian shirts here in our country, or specifically in my area, is of course looked at with surprise, sometimes with a bit of a frown. You don't get to see a lot of shirts with a positive message, more so one that proclaims the love and goodness of God, nowadays. I believe it is refreshing to have something really positive to see on our clothing today, like you said...

"I mean, people can wear the most horrible shirts and nobody complains and everybody talks about free speech - but when a Christian wants to speak freely about his/her faith through a shirt...then all of a sudden there is a problem."

And with regard to religious expression being "deeply personal"? Yes, it is deeply personal but it wouldn't be fit to really be called "expression" if it can only reach within the four corners of the church and home. Well, I just don't get how it is there in America. How weird is that? Teachers getting "distracted" by Christian shirts? Are they not distracted by shirts that say foul words and show profanity and vulgar symbolisms/messages that suggest sex and immorality is something to be embraced today?

Anyway, the simplest thing we can do is PRAY. We're not supposed to win them with words but by the way we live and the Spirit of God within us. And yes, indeed persecution comes upon those who really are genuine children of God (1 Tim. 3:12).

I would like to encourage you all behind JesusBranded. Just continue on with your ministry. And PRAY WITHOUT CEASING! God bless you more! My prayers are with you and all the other believers out there!

  • I'm wondering, if we polled all the students in the public schools who did not profess to be christians and asked them if they felt like the students who wore t-shirts with Christian sayings/images on them were 'pushing' their 'religion' on them - what would they say? I'm willing to bet the answer would lean toward the No side.

Another note - I bet if the t-shirts were touting pantheism (belief that God is in everything and everything is God) or deism (belief of God but not in God) or atheism (no God at all) or islam, judaism, hinduism or buddaism (sp?) - would they have a problem with that? Again - I would bet the answer is no.

The one quote religion unquote that can actually save people - they have a problem with. Christianity is the only 'religion' whose 'founder' claimed to be more than a prophet. Mohammed claimed to be a prophet - as did Buddha. But Jesus claimed to be God

If we Christians would mature - I think it would help our cause too. I mean - what good is your t-shirt that talks about purity doing when they watch you making out with your bf/gf?

Wear your t-shirts with a mission. READ YOUR OWN T-SHIRT IN THE MORNING! Act upon what it says!!

May God's favor be evident in the lives of those who read this!

    God bless you all :)

  • In response to cogito. America is about freedom of which is having the choice to say no to what one might consider bad for themselves. Freedom is not about having the right (right for the sake of rights) to do whatever one wishes. We as Christians should throw out this pollitically correct garbage and stand up for what is right for us and what is right for a country and society that was founded upon Christainity and the laws contained therien. The attitude and beliefes that you are speaking of in your posting is exactly why our country is going down the toilet. The liberal judges the ACLU (American civil lunatics union) and all of the cronnies that are connected to these people and similiar organizations are going to turn this great nation into a bunch of linguini spined brainwashed idiots that cannot think or act for themselves. Prayer as well as any symbol of Christianity can and should be allowed anywhere in public. Part of the reason that they are not is because there is a minority of rights for the sake of rights individuals in this country that get there agendas put into law through the liberal judges and aclu attorneys because they know that this type of legislation would not go over at the ballot box. We as Chriatians should be bold and outspoken about our faith our God and our beliefs. Maybe you should take a look at the history at the NEA and what their agenda is as well as organizations like planned parenthood that are racsist and want to creat a superior race etc. Now we have a hippie sit in congress that gets nothing done and just has sit ins and wants to revise and wash away the lines between right and wrong and create what they see as some great utopian universe that is completely without controls or rules and laws. If we are not careful our countries sovierenty and security and safety will be yanked out from under us.

  • I believe we should keep this in context of the reality that Christians will be persecuted. We will be hated and scorned. It should not be a concern when the reality of enmity against the world becomes present in everyday life. Just remember that they can take our expression, but they can never rob us of our persuasion, a persuasion that is so strong that it should set us on fire to testify with whatever means necessary. By our testimony we overcome. Embrace the persecution like a radical, this isn't about arguing how we're not a discomfort to the average student, this isn't about arguing how its "fair" we wear what we want. This isn't about politics and religion. This is about living as not of this world and not trying to be accepted. Use our persecution as testimony to the truth.

  • I love wearing my christian t-shirts! In fact they are about 90% of my closet. I think that the thought of banning these shirts is unbelievable! These shirts display the true message of our Lord and I'm not ashamed of it. If the shirts offend someone, let them take the responsibility to not look at it if that be their wish. Prayer in school is diminishing and the Ten Commandments on the walls are fading away. Let us not forget how our country was founded and who gave us these rights. God Bless and keep this situation!

By Anonymous Anonymous, At November 28, 2007 7:17 PM

  • All this banning and such is just cutting off my first amendment rights!! If I can't wear my tshirt that has a Bible verse on it then that means NO religious shirts can be allowed. No athiest shirts, no Jewish shirts, no Buddha shirts, no no NO. AND while we're at it NO political shirts of any kind, no sports shirts for your favorite team, no lame phrases tshirst either. Heck we might as well not wear shirts at all. This is why some schools have UNIFORMS. So if they don't like my shirts then they better get uniforms or expell me. There was a school in Colorado (I'm pretty sure it was CO) where kids couldn't wear any military stuff EVEN camoflauge! Two girls excepted expulsion because they wore their Marine tshirts to school in support of their brother in Iraq. How sick can we get? Expell some girls for Marine tshirts?
I have the RIGHT under the FIRST AMMENDMENT to wear a tshirt that says "FAITH" with a verse. This isn't even going against seperation of church and state. I can understand shirts that are "indecent" because of the cut of there are illegal things on it (hence the illegal part) And if they take my rights away and give all others exception like team shirts (which are the main cause of up roar in my school if you want my my opinion) then they are hypocrites.

  • I'm curious... and I'm not sure this question can be answered easily... Why are non-believers so bothered by Christian shirts? When I see t-shirts that have messages I don't espouse (other than profanity), I just shrug and hope and pray that the wearer will come to knowledge of the Truth one day. Now, for me, profanity is different. I am offended by profanity, but more because it's usually so vulgar (the "f-bomb" may be just an expression *these days*, but it's a word that refers to a specific type of behavior), and because rampant profanity fills the minds of children, who ought to be shielded from it. I guess what I'm saying is simply, "Why do non-believers care?" And if they ARE so *offended* (which I think is a PC term for "uncomfortable"), what makes them uncomfortable? A barely distinguishable pang of conscience that says, "Psst... that shirt has a point..." ??? It is certainly true that Christians have been promised "trouble" and persecution. But it's also true, as we all know from our own experiences, that sinners do NOT want the Truth staring them in the face!

God bless every student who courageously bares their soul on their t-shirt every day at school. As a public school teacher, I cannot partake of the same "freedom" you have... but if I were YOUR teacher, I'd smile and say, "Good for you," every day you wore your Truth-witnessing clothes. Even if I had to say it quietly in my heart. <3

  • I have only had positive experiences from wearing my JesusBranded shirts to school. It would be ridiculous for people to ban Christian shirts. A shirt can't do anyone harm. I just want to say thank you to you guys. I love your shirts so much and I think what you do is great. Keep it up! Wearing your shirts gives me a chance to share my faith in a subtle way and try to show people what I believe in. God bless you all!

  • No, Christian shirts should not be banned, and sadly i think this is starting to happen at my school. I am 16 and almost all my clothes are Christian clothes. One day i lent one of my Christian shirts to a friend because she really wanted to wear it. The shirt says "Virginity Rocks" on the front and "I am loving my husband and i haven't even met him" on the back. Well the principle stopped her in the hallway and told her to cover up her shirt because it wasn't appropriate. She did, but honestly why should she have to? Last i knew we had the right to free speech. He said it was inappropriate but honestly its not because Virginity is not a dirty word. He would have the right to if it said sex rocks but thats totally different. I think our schools need Christian t-shirts especially ones that promote things like staying pure until marriage because sadly sex is promoted a lot and is filling young peoples minds which it shouldn't. I mean, aren't we "ONE NATION UNDER GOD" yes we are. If they banned Christian t-shirts and/or Gods name in schools they will be taking away a gigantic part of me. Also, any time im wearing a Christian shirt, sure i get lots of stares and weird looks but i always have at least one person say they love the tee and that its awesome how its showing Gods word. Today i wore a t-shirt i have that says "Pick Jesus and Romans 10:13 (written really small)" and its inside of a huge guitar pick. Well ive been helping this girl out at my school who's struggling with self harm and anger problems and ive been telling her a lot about how God can help with all that and that He can turn her life around. Well today when she saw the shirt she said "Wow i love that shirt, I'm definitely going to look up that verse, Romans 10:13" It was really awesome to hear her say that and who knows it could help her.

So no they definitely should not be banned because Christians have a freedom to speech too!

  • i would first ask why porn is being protested by so many Christians that when over half the population views porn 1 way or another that the we still have more people speaking out against it than for it and most of the people against it are Christians so what goes around comes around u tried to stifle peoples free speech and now those people are returning the favor

free speech is something that needs to be protected at all costs free speech belongs to the people not the church other wise we should elect ben laden as president

By Anonymous Anonymous, At January 30, 2008 2:19 AM

  • lets ask do u believe in free speech well over half the population view porn 1 way or another but we have more protester against it than for it most people against it are Christians
Christians are stifling free speech in the name of god now some people returning the favor

i believe free speech is something that must be protected at all costs
free speech belongs to the poeple not the church or we should elect ben laden as president

and have the church make the laws for what they believe are solders abroad have died to for the free will of other and we have taliban growing right here in some peoples views and they will fight just as hard to keep are free will at home if not harder how many signatures do u think it would take to name small Cristian sect as A extremest group if a partition was started if 40% of Americans singed it the catholic church would be on that list so think about that before you do somethin in the lords name or in vain of it

i dont think it is right for cristian tee shirts to be banned in school but i believe thare is a good reason behind it and wont protest it as as it is sending a message that needs to be sent

  • there are faith inspired tees available that are wonderful, inspirational, yet subtle and cool - perfect for expressing oneself in school with creating any controversy. (e.g., www.rediswhite.com)

  • What the heck? Ok. Christian tee's need to go along with every other form of advertizing on clothing such as : Nike, sport teams, Rock stars, Pop Stars, Sport Stars, brand labels and let's not forget that any Muslim girl will not be allowed to wear her head covering...
Sheesh! This is America people. Freedom is freedom. Like it or not, it is not a "right" in America to not be offended by others. You will be offended many many many times in America by different people and different views. If not, you might want to check your address. I am a happy Christian, a God loving citizen who loves this country and all the different people of my country. How lucky our nation is to have so many different and wonderful views and how blessed we are to be able to express them. So, as an American I say--- ....Christian Tee's in school, no problem. Muslim girls jilbaab, no problem, Jewish Kippahs, no problem, AC DC "Highway to Hell" tee shirt, no problem.>>> BUT.. Any American who want to force others to give up their American freedoms so they won't be offended...BIG PROBLEM!

  • I don’t know the credentials this person has or where they developed this view from, but I work in the public schools and I have never once seen a Christian t shirt that has caused a disturbance. I believe the problem is the fact that some people (liberals) mistakenly believe that the separation of church and state actually exists, which it does not. As a matter of fact when Thomas Jefferson wrote the letter that contains the phrase separation of church and state he wrote it to a group of Baptists that were worried that they would have to support a state sponsored Anglican religion. The separation of church and state was originally meant to guarantee that everyone had the write to worship as they please, which includes t shirts. Not allowing students to wear Christian t shirts would actually be an infringement upon there first amendment rights. This is not opinion it is fact

If I have to look to the t shirts that represent the darkness I'm alowed to wear my Christian T shirt that represent the ligh.I WILL WEAR MY T SHIRT AND BE PROUD OF IT.
